THE VIDEOS Skip right to the main attraction: this unlisted playlist on YouTube which is the best compilation of all the events of Jessie Buys a House, all the way from the start till the present (still being updated -- the most recent videos are at the end of the playlist so you can watch it in chronological order -- just skip ahead to where you left off).
WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT, ANYWAY?
I really didn't expect that this would turn into the project it has, and I'm so glad I had shot some footage of the early part of the adventure! I actually had resistance to getting a home at first, LOTS of resistance, and thankfully my family, Maj, Faj, KeeKee especially, and Lexi, all had so much enthusiasm and momentum that it just broke right through my resistance and swept me up in to the project. Once the initial overwhelming steps were accomplished (getting a loan, cleaning up the yard, moving in) followd by the sudden HALT of our remodeling ideas because we needed to wait for structural engineering (coming in March 2026), I got the chance to settle into the house, feel its energies, and percolate on: what do I actually want to do with this amazing gift? How can I truly restore this gorgeous 1900 home that has features that are no longer available in a modern home, and preserve and enhance the warmth and feel that is probably impossible to accomplish in a new build home. As my nervous system relaxed into finally having a home (I've moved ten times since I came to Colorado in 2019!), and I began to attune to the house, it became more and more clear to me: this house is going to be a sanctuary for me and all who enter.
This project is evolving and literally, this house is teaching me as I go -- morphing into a blog on how to create a truly organic home, free from the "smart" features that are so harmful for our health, intentional, historic.
HOW IT STARTED
It all started with my younger sister, KeeKee, here on a visit from Kentucky, enlisting the family in a "foreclosure tour" around Longmont based off some random website she found. "Jessie needs a house," she decided when I shared about the laments of finding a new apartment (which would be my 10th move in 5 years, exhausting!), and since she got an amazing deal on her 5-acre foreclosure home in Kentucky a few years back, that's how we started. Little did we know that the list of homes she found online was a total scam and we spent the day cruising around looking at homes that were not, in fact, foreclosed, but it got me into the mindset of, "what if it is actually possible ..." and the house hunt was ON!
The adventure has been filled with hilarious moments and lots of surprises -- and in true ex-Journalist fashion (my family will tell you I've been obsessed with documenting things via photo, video, and in writing since I was 8 years old and was gifted my first Kodak camera for my birthday), I've been shooting photos of nearly every step of the way.
The surprising part is that owning a historic home (combined with my personal preference for natural, non-toxic building and living materials and my penchant for utilizing spaces for healing) has also been a deep driver for my learning the 'old ways' and finding out how to do historic preservation and restoration. So I hope this journey is not only entertaining to you, dear reader, but is also educational and inspiring in a way that helps you, too, create a living space that nourishes your body, mind, heart and spirit.
